ISR DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY INITIATIVE

Problem Statement

The ISR Digital Accessibility initiative aims to ensure that all digital content — websites, files, and PDF resources — associated with the Institute for Social Research (ISR) is accessible to both internal and external stakeholders, adhering to the updated federal guidelines outlined by the Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Compliance with these guidelines is required by April 2026.

In alignment with the University of Michigan’s commitment to creating a digitally inclusive environment, particularly as outlined in the Vision 2034 plan, this project underscores the importance of accessibility as a pillar of public service, research excellence, and transformative education. The updated 2024 regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act specify new requirements for digital accessibility compliance for public universities. Compliance ensures that digital resources are accessible and equitable for all users, including those with disabilities. The project will follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standards, complementing the university’s existing policy SPG 601.20 on Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility.
